Maths on Screen

"Maths Inspiration is one of the largest maths enrichment programmes for teenagers in the UK. The shows, for Year 11 and Sixth Form students, take place in theatres and feature the UK’s most inspiring maths speakers. They blend entertainment with a serious message about the value of mathematics and generate encouragement to consider A level Mathematics and Further Mathematics. Go to www.mathsinspiration.com to find out about this year’s programme.

There is a now a chance for your students to experience the shows in your classroom. Recorded in front of live audiences of Year 10s, six Maths Inspiration DVDs are now available. These make an excellent enrichment resource for the classroom. The content is pitched a little younger than the shows, and you'll find content here that's relevant from Key Stage 3 all the way up to Key Stage 5.

All the speakers are superb and there are many, many highlights including mathematical juggling with Colin Wright, flying objects with Hugh Hunt, and Steve Mould taking curves of constant width into three dimensions. Maths Inspiration shows and DVDs will appeal to lots of students – even students who you may not have considered would enjoy mathematical enrichment before."

MEI - Maths in Education & Industry

"Best-selling maths author Rob Eastaway and Stand-up Mathematician and broadcaster Matt Parker have teamed up to produce a series of maths DVDs that are set to change the way that teenagers think about maths.

The Maths Inspiration DVDs, which feature six different maths shows filmed live at Greenwich Theatre in front of teenage audiences, are not only entertaining but also reveal the beauty and relevance of maths, in everything from designing rollercoastes to creating new tunes.

The DVDs feature several top communicators from the world of maths and engineering, including Sky at Night presenter Lucie Green, Channel 4 documentary presenter Hugh Hunt and BBC Science expert Steve Mould.

With titles such as Are You Feeling Lucky?, What’s the Trick? and From Jugging to Jazz, the DVDs are designed to appeal to 13-16 year olds, and are a valuable resource that teachers can use to bring topics such as algebra, trigonometry and mechanics to life. There are six DVDs, each featuring a show that lasts between 70 and 90 minutes, with two speakers and Matt Parker as the host."

"Maths should be both fun and interesting - and this excellent series makes it so. As Einstein said, everything should be made as simple as possible - but no simpler. This is what has been achieved - and it is only possible because the makers clearly understand their subject inside out. The kids actually ask to borrow this. Well done, Maths on Screen - I cannot recommend this highly enough!"

Alex Ritson, broadcaster

"It's [the Are You Feeling Lucky DVD] a really good video about probability....Matt and Ben do a really good job of making the math accessible and entertaining."

“The other staff who came with me [to the Maths Inspiration Show] on Monday haven’t stopped talking about it. More importantly, nor have the pupils, many of whom went home that evening to tell their parents what a fantastic day they’d had and, I suspect, to try out some of the games they’d seen at the show.”

Jon Williams, Mathematics Teacher, Brentwood School

“My home educated daughter Emilia is not keen on maths and the idea of attending a couple of your shows to expose her to Mathematics in a different and original way was not hers!...We both found the speakers engaging, fun and interesting to listen to… All in all, mission accomplished, Emilia enjoyed the day and was positively inspired. Thank you!”
